XEWKIJA BASILIC ST JohN BAPTIST - GOZO part 1

Hi everybody !
I'm happy to start this year with new articles about Gozo ! I went there yesterday and it was great and emotional! I will share you three differents posts about beautiful place : mainly churches!
First I took the bus and the ferry boat :) Usually in France I took more the train than the boat but now I guess I have new habits^^

Je suis heureuse de commencer cette année avec de nouveaux articles sur Gozo ! J'y suis allée hier et c'était génial et émouvant ! Je vais vous partager trois articles différents sur des lieux magnifiques : principalement des églises !
J'ai d'abord pris le bus et le ferry pour aller à Gozo :)
En France, je suis plutôt habituée à prendre davantage le train que le bateau mais maintenant je suppose que j'ai de nouvelles habitudes^^
First Stop : XEWKIJA
I decided to go to Xewkija to see the Basilic of St John The Baptist
"This is the biggest church in Gozo and boasts the third largest unsupported dome in the world. "

Première étape : XEWKIJA
J'ai décidé d'aller à Xewkija pour voir la basilique de Saint-Jean-Baptiste
"Il s’agit de la plus grande église de Gozo, dotée du troisième plus grand dôme non soutenu au monde."
"The monumental church is an enormous circular structure in white local limestone. Eight concrete columns covered with stone support its elegant dome, 75 metres high, with a 28 metre diameter, a circumference of 85 metres and a weight estimated at around 45,000 tonnes. The interior is decorated with fine sculptures and modern paintings. The floor is in polished Carrara marble and the main altar is also carved in precious marble."

"L’église monumentale est une immense structure circulaire en calcaire blanc local. Huit colonnes en béton recouvertes de pierre soutiennent son élégante coupole de 75 m de haut, d’un diamètre de 28 m, d’une circonférence de 85 m et d’un poids estimé à environ 45 000 tonnes. L’intérieur est orné de sculptures raffinées et de peintures modernes. Le sol est en marbre de Carrare poli et l’autel principal est lui aussi sculpté dans le marbre précieux."
The most important fact about this church is the reconstruction. Indeed in 1951, they decided to elarge this place because it was to small for the need of the society. They began to rebuild a "new church" with keeping the first one. There is a "sculptur museum" who remind us how was the church before: as you can see on these pictures :

Le fait le plus important à propos de cette église est sa reconstruction. En effet, en 1951, ils ont décidé d'agrandir ce lieu car il était devenu trop petit pour les besoins de la société. Ils ont commencé à reconstruire une "nouvelle église" en conservant la première. Il y a un "musée des sculpteurs" qui remémore comment l'église était avant : comme vous pouvez le voir sur ces photos :

And then the best part: I went on the roof to see the spectacular view of Gozo and all the details of this church. Amazing!
Et puis la meilleure partie : Je suis allée sur le toit pour voir la vue spectaculaire de Gozo et tous les détails de cette église. Incroyable !
